1. The Classic Botswana Circuit
Route: Maun → Okavango Delta → Savuti → Chobe → Victoria Falls → Makgadikgadi Salt Pans → Maun
If there is one self-drive safari that belongs on every bucket list, this is it.
Botswana offers one of the last truly wild overland journeys in Africa. First, there are the waterways of the Okavango Delta. Next come the predator-rich plains of Savuti and the elephant capital of Chobe. As a result, every stretch of this route feels completely different from the last.
Admittedly, the driving can be challenging. Deep sand tracks and remote wilderness make you feel a world away from modern life. The adventure begins along the famous Route 62. Soon, travellers enter the vast open spaces of the Great Karoo, where endless horizons and spectacular night skies create a sense of timelessness. At Tswalu, scale is the whole point. This is South Africa’s largest private reserve, yet it hosts only a handful of guests at any one time. Few lodges commit to a sense of place quite like this one. Its ten cabins are built to echo the hulls of the vessels that came to grief along this coastline, canted into the dunes between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers. Inside there are wood-burning stoves and long windows onto the sand; outside there is nothing but fog, dune and Atlantic. It is also the only lodge inside Skeleton Coast National Park, officially the least visited of all Namibia’s parks. Consequently, the wildlife is startling for a place that looks incapable of supporting any at all — brown hyena, desert-adapted elephant, and one of the few viable lion populations outside Etosha. Best of all, nobody rushes you in the morning. The fog rarely lifts before nine, so days here begin late by design.
