Other Destinations
A brief look into some of our other favourite destinations around South Africa.
ROUTE 62
Route 62 might market itself as the longest Wine Route in the world, but that’s definitely not all there is to it. Lush greenery and fertile valleys form a stark contrast against the semi-desert of the Klein Karoo, while towering mountains and their rivers and streams provide an awe-inspiring backdrop throughout. Some of the renowned attractions visitors will spot as they follow the route are the winelands of the Breede River Valley, the majestic Swartberg mountains, the Cango Caves and ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn and the fruit orchards of the Langkloof Valley.
MADIKWE GAME RESERVE
The malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve is a 75 000 ha region of untamed beauty located in South Africa’s North West. This wild terrain boasts a tapestry of landscapes that encompasses vast open plains, dense bushveld and towering rocky peaks. All of this offers sanctuary to a kaleidoscope of creatures, including the ‘Super Seven’.
NAMAQUALAND
Every year in early spring, the arid Namaqualand region of South Africa transforms itself into a kaleidoscope of colour, with the flowering of thousands of wildflowers. This short-lived, vibrant explosion of colour in what is usually a barren landscape, brings a multitude of local and international visitors who come for the flower season’s endlessly photogenic landscapes, wild flower shows and warm West Coast hospitality.
KAROO
Composed of the Great and Little Karoo, this vast semi-desert region may seem harsh and unforgiving to some, but to others it’s a sanctuary of peace and silence with its own unique, compelling beauty. Extending across 400 000 square kilometres of the country, the Karoo is South Africa’s biggest ecosystem and its arid scrublands shelter a surprisingly rich diversity of plant, bird and animal life. Highlights of the area are the fossil trail in the Karoo National Park and the annual Olive Festival in the small town of Prince Albert.
CEDERBERG
The Cederberg is wild, rugged, dramatic and above all, breathtakingly beautiful. The region’s valleys are lined with citrus orchards and surrounded by magnificent mountains that become even more spectacular at sunset, when they are bathed in vivid colours. Hiking, bouldering and rock-climbing are popular pursuits in this beautiful natural wilderness, which also affords visitors opportunities to swim in crystal clear rock pools, discover ancient rock art, or marvel at the biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom of South Africa.
TSWALU KALAHARI
Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa’s largest private game reserve, now protecting over 110,000 hectares of spectacular grasslands and mountains. The vision of this reserve is to ‘restore the Kalahari to itself.’ No more than 30 guests at a time can discover the beauty of this arid savannah, its diverse wildlife and the serenity of what may well be South Africa’s last great wilderness.
Guests are encouraged to experience a variety of game-viewing opportunities over and above the regular game drives in a 4X4 vehicle – from guided bush walks, leisurely horseback safaris, to spending time with habituated meerkats. Every booking receives a private vehicle, guide, and tracker. This allows for total flexibility and a personalised safari plan offering, with no set game drive times.
A customised safari plan means that Tswalu has no set meal times and therefore caters to guests at their pace without impacting on their safari experience. Guests are also able to experience a variety of dining options including boma feasts and bush dinners, sundowners, wine tastings, champagne breakfasts and dune picnics.
WATERBERG
The Waterberg District, located in the majestic Waterberg Mountains, is a tourism gem with several great nature reserves and a wealth of wildlife roaming its bushveld savannah. Its major attractions include hot springs, South Africa’s first-ever savannah biosphere reserve – the bird-rich Nyslvley Wetland and the archaeological site of Makapans Valley.
