Trekking Africa

No other experience allows you to possibly explore and connect to a country more so than donning your trekking boots and hitting the trails.

Possibly the most famed is the bucket list experience of spending time face-to-face with wild gorillas in their natural habitat. The fact that gorillas as a species are on the verge of extinction and treks are a highly restricted activity, encountering wild gorillas is deemed a once-in-a-lifetime travel experience.

Along with the gorillas, another truly special experience is to track and trek with the chimpanzees.

If an out and out hike is more of interest the options are endless, from the peaks of the Drakensberg to the highest summits in Africa including Mount Kenya, Kilimanjaro and The Rwenzori mountain range. Throughout Africa there are hikes to suite all levels of fitness and expertise.

Itineraries

A 2-night trek combined with 2 nights at Lake Natron Camp. Starting on the rim of Empakai Crater, in the Ngorongoro Highlands, with stunning views inside the crater, you spend a cosy night at Empakai Camp. You then trek to Leonotis Camp, through picturesque Maasai villages, to a remote camp just on the edge of the Gregorian Rift. After a magical night at Leonotis Camp, camping underneath the stars and golden acacia trees, you trek down the Rift Valley, with breathtaking views throughout. You are collected at the base of the rift, by car, and transferred to Lake Natron Camp, where you can relax by the natural pool, have a massage and take part in activities such as waterfall gorge hikes, flamingo walks and seeing hominid footprints…and not to forget well deserved sundowners!

A different take on Kilimanjaro. While this route misses some of the dramatic geological features of the standard routes, such as Machame and Lemosho, it does head way off the beaten track and has a charm all of its own. For those that want the most remote trip, or to trek the exact same route as the Comic Relief Team in 2019, this is the route for you.

Located in southwestern Uganda, the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is said to be Africa’s oldest rainforest. It is world-renowned for its excellent gorilla-sighting opportunities. Aside from the amazing gorilla interactions, there are other drawcards such as a network of forest walks, over 340 species of bird to spot and a variety of butterflies. A primate trip to Uganda would also not be complete without a trek to see the chimpanzees in the Kibale Forest.

This 5 day / 4 night Rwanda gorilla trek is exciting to say the least! It involves hiking through lush sloping hills and spotting a gorilla peeking out from the bush with its mother watching over her babies as you intrude into their colony. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will create those once in a lifetime memories.
