Some favoured locations to explore in Malawi include:
CAPE MACLEAR
Situated on the southern lakeshore of Lake Malawi and at the tip of a peninsula, Cape Maclear, with Monkey Bay closet, is a quaint town surrounded by mountains and endless water views. The small town features an exotic mix sand-covered beach bars, local restaurants and array of lodges. Cape Maclear is simply paradise! Kayak over to the nearby island, spot the majestic fish eagle soaring over the lake, sail the water of the lake and snap a picture of the breathtaking African sunset, or try your hand scuba diving in the crystal-clear water of the lake, which boasts some of the best freshwater diving in the world.
LIWONDE NATIONAL PARK
The Liwonde National Park lies at the very southern tip of Lake Malawi, where the Shire River drains out from the lake to form the natural western border of the park. This protected area with its significant source of water ensures an abundance of wildlife and birdlife throughout the year. Perhaps one of the most captivating aspects of the park are its towering palm trees with alternating landscapes of mopane woodlands, brilliant candelabra trees, baobabs and lush riverine forests. Capping this off is the ability to arrive to your lodge by boat as you take in the sights of sun-soaked crocodiles and the disgruntled snorts of the hippos. Liwonde National Park is a uniquely Malwaian destination!
MAJETE WILDLIFE RESERVE
Majete Wildlife Reserve is situated in the beautiful Shire valley in the South West of Malawi, close to the city of Blantyre. This reserve is a seasoned safari-goers dream destination. Lacking the tourist numbers compared to Africas’ other more famous reserves, this is true wilderness at its best. Boasting Africa’s Big Five, and with an enviable bird list, the beauty of Majete Wildlife Reserve is well worth a visit.
MOUNT MAJETE
At a height a little over 3000m, Mount Majete is not only Malawi’s but also Central Africa’s highest peak. Exceptional hikes and treks are a given, along with the waterfalls, rivers and rock pools and the striking bare rock flanks of this great massif mean that this destination is a must for any adventure seeker and the perfect place to walk off all of the delicious safari cuisine!
